"Blues and Other Love Songs" была первоначально выпущена на лейбле Muse records. Houston Person также можно услышать вместе с Брауном на 32 jazz переиздании Lost and Found, которое объединяет альбомы Sweet Slumber и Wildflower на одном диске. Allmusic Review by Al Campbell
Charles Brown is a name known today more in legend than by first-hand awareness of the depth of his musical accomplishment. This album should open contemporary ears to his profound piano style and luscious singing voice. Brown's legendary status was insured by his first big record, "Driftin Blues", in 1946, with Johnny Moore and the Three Blazers. With Brown on piano and vocal, the Three Blazers took the elegant sound of the Nat King Cole trio and made it grittier. At the same time, Brown's mellow vocal style offered a refined side of blues singing that struck a responsive chord with popular audiences. At the height of his fame, record store owners reported that Charles Brown records sold out so fast that they had to restock their bins every half hour. Brown became a progenitor of an entire school of rhythm and blues, and the impact of his approach remains tacitly present in all popular music since. Charles Brown was born in Texas in 1922 and studied music as a child. He also pursued academic studies and graduated college with a degree in chemistry. He began work as a research chemist, but was drafted during World War II. The military excused him because of a medical condition, and the services' loss became our gain, as Charles then settled in California and embarked on his musical career. (In another sense, Brown and the incipient R&B music served the war effort, entertaining the huge black audience of the troops and immigrant industrial workers stationed in California during the war.) Brown paid his dues in L. A. working the Lincoln Theater and Ivie Anderson's Chicken Shack in a style influenced by his idols Pha Terrell and Nat King Cole himself. Eventually he teamed up with Johnny Moore and his Three Blazers, which stayed together into the late 1940's. After leaving the group, Brown had continued success as a single for a number of years, but gradually drifted into obscurity. He left behind a string of now forgotten hit records, but an influence acknowledged by blues singers from Ray Charles onward. Recently, Charles Brown has suffered the misfortune of being "rediscovered". He was lionized at the famous New York blues bar Tramps and then George Nierenberg's commendable PBS documentary "All That Rhythm and Those Blues" gave him some recognition. Brown received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement award from the new Rhythm and Blues Founda- tion. Pop singer Bonnie Raitt took him on tour and exposed him to a younger generation, and Charles followed up with some fine albums on blues labels. Here, we get the chance to have the focus on Charles Brown's piano playing in a jazz tinged outing. This is NOT a nostalgia trip, but the work of a fresh and vibrant artist with a timeless, universal sound that stands on its own merit. Charles has a felicitous sparkle whether singing existential love songs or improvising at the keyboards. Brown's piano is a revelation. He plays in a spare and precise style that is piquant and tasty. At times, he effects a stride piano mode, and throughout, there is a pre-bebop grace that has a direct link to the earliest jazz piano traditions. But he's not old fashioned-- listen to moments on "Who's Beating My Time" and "One Mint Julep" where Brown shifts into amazing flights of dissonance that suggest a proto-Thelonious Monk. The solo version of "Round Midnight" is astounding, so fresh after hundreds of other hackneyed recordings, that one imagines how the young Monk himself might have played it. The program of BLUES AND OTHER LOVE SONGS give ample room for Brown's piano and his relaxed vocals. All of the titles have fine jazz playing. There are some of his old favorites, like "You Are My First love", and "What A Life" (recorded by Brown's hero Pha Terrell with Andy Kirk in 1938), and solely instumentals versions of jazz classics "One Mint Julep" and "Round Midnight". Brown also retrieves old chestnuts like "I've Got A Right To Cry" from Joe Liggins, who became a jazz vehicle for Jimmy Forrest and Erskine Hawkins, and "Fool That I Am", which was good for The Ravens and Etta James but which Brown does in his own style. The selection of material is typical for Brown. His blues are not of the sweaty, lascivious variety. Instead, he sings love songs of heartache and emotion that have their own sentimental message more appropriate for the boudoir than the bordello and can be appreciated by a wide humanity and not just the hipster intimate. The selection of musicians is also sympathetic. The rhythm section was handpicked by Brown to support his unique sensibilities. Special mention must be made of Danny Caron, who ably fills the guitar spot. He supplies the Oscar Moore sound of both the Nat King Cole trio and the Three Blazers as an eloquent underpinning essential to the presentation. The tenor sax belongs to Houston Person, who is also the catalyst for the date. Person should be well-known to jazz fans from his partnership with Etta Jones and tough tenor work in countless jazz outings (many heard on the Muse label). His robust yet sweet hom is the perfect complement to Brown's style. Houston had known Charles years back and they rekindled their acquaintance when they both appeared on the same bill in a San Francisco concert last June. They couldn't wait for a chance to record together, and this great album is the result. Sid Gribetz
