Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Little Milton.., Ее альбом "Sweetheart of the Blues" был выпущен под ее собственным именем на Delmark Records в 1995 году.
A community consists of many people, friends and family, working and living closely together. In some long-standing communities, members often become extended families. Acoustic Blue Chicago is the showcase of four individuals who have melded into a musical family unit over the past twenty years. Willie Kent, Johnny B. Moore, Bonnie Lee and "Mad Dog" Lester Davenport came into the Blue Chicago Store on a blustery November night to record the CD you now hold in your hand. Outside, the winds were whipping at a 60-mile per hour clip. Inside, the small gathering was friendly and an acoustic-like setting mellowed the music. The focal point is the fellowship of the artists. With Moore on guitar and Davenport on harmonica, the basement of the store was filled with tin* music and the camaraderie of the tight-knit group. Most of the soni»s are blues standards, however Kent gives us a gem of an original. With his signature urgent, haunting style, Kent's voice literally melts over the music giving it a glaze and creating a sumptuous treat. The highly skilled Moore lays down a pattern of thick rhythms and swelling leads that allows himself, as well as the others to be vocally free. Davenport's harmonica is at once powerful and smooth though he is not overbearing in the intimate setting. Lee's jaunty vocals lends tingle and spice, rounding everything off. Johnny В., Willie and Bonnie have worked at Blue Chicago for over 10 years. In the beginning as one band, now* as a combination of two. Their familiarity paid off. Friendship that ages through the years can easily turn into a surrogate family and the live performance that resulted in Acoustic Blue Chicago was like a family gathering at home. Three of the artist's on this recording were working as a steady band when owner Gino Battagalia first sought them out. "We were working at Mary's Lounge at 358 S. Pulaski" recalls Willie Kent. "Gino came down there and asked us would we like to play in his club. It had to be around 1985. That was when the club was on North State Street. He used to come down to the bowling alley where we played, too. That's where he saw Bonnie Lee. Me, Lester and *B' were already good friends by then." Johnny B. remembered some of the other clubs thai they used to hang around on the west side; "Back then I was working with Koko Taylor and Willie Dixon. I'd be up at Mary's, Domino's on Western and Roosevelt, The Majestic Lounge or Ma Bea's and I'd play with a lot of musicians including Willie and Mad Dog- I've known all them including Bonnie since the '60s." One cannot pinpoint when an acquaintance turns into a friendship or when a friendship evolves into an extended family member. Davenport explains it was a natural process for him. "It just happened. Long time ago, musicians hung out from club to club so you'd go around every night and play together. Back then, if you weren't on a specific gig. whoever was on stage that's who you played with. So you remember who you worked good with and when you got a gig you called them. Me and Kent did that all the time. We had been working at Mary's about two years when Gino came to see us. I met Kent in early the '70s, Bonnie Lee too. I met her through Sunnyland Slim. See, me and Kent not only played together, we like each other's company so when we were just hangin' out we'd call each other up." "We do that now!" states Kent. "Me and Mad Dog and 'B' have worked in some places where we didn't know if we were gonna get paid or not. Everybody won't do that, it's got to be somebody you're close with." "We all are close just like a family" says Bonnie. "I feel good about them and the recording too! That worked out good down there 'cause I had fun. It makes a difference when you're comfortable with the people you work with. Johnny B. can play, he knows my stuff. We worked at a place call Lilly's for a long while. He can really get me going when he plays next to me. I got acquainted with Lester when we were with Sunnyland. As far as Willie Kent, I owe him a lot 'cause there was a time I stopped singing and Kent came by and got me back out, started me back singing. I've worked with him the most." Acoustic Blue Chicago is an open house of a familv of artists. Recorded live in the basement of the Blue Chicago Store it is the perfect example of how a family of the blues works together.
